The New York Jets has made yet another trade, this time moving cornerback Michael Carter II and a seventh round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for wide receiver John Metchie III and a sixth round pick. I have mixed thoughts about this one because I do think the Jets need a wide receiver. I'm not confident in that group outside of Garrett Wilson, but I wished they wouldn't have traded Carter to him.
I've watched Metchie in Alabama, so I'm familiar with what he's capable of, and since he's been in the league, his rookie season with the Houston Texans--who drafted him in the second round in 2022--ended before it started because of leukemia, from there, he was buried under the depth chart because the Texans were so deep at receiver, but he showed flashes when he was able to get snaps.
The Texans WR depth, though riddled with injuries, is still deep today, which I think ultimately led them to trading him to the Eagles during the preseason, who have now traded him to the Jets, making this the second time he has been traded in one season, which doesn't happen often in football.

Quick side note: it wouldn't surprise me if it's revealed later that Joe Douglas, who was the Jets GM, now back with the Eagles, was in (Eagles GM) Howie Roseman's ear regarding Carter, being that Carter was one of Douglas' draft picks.
Since Metchie has been in the league, I've always said I think he could be something once given an opportunity. Looks like my words are coming back on me because this definitely looks like a grand opportunity. I just wish they wouldn't traded Carter to get him. I'm not saying he's Patrick Surtain II or Derek Stingley or Trent McDufffie, but he was valuable to the Jets defense the past five seasons. Why couldn't they trade Brandon Stephens instead?
Oh well, the move has been made, let's see what happens. I usually don't miss when I see potential or upside in someone, and I'm optimistic that Metchie, if given a chance, will prove me right. Everything happens for a reason.
